Krabi, Southern administrative province in Thailand.
Krabi is an administrative division in southern Thailand along the Andaman Sea, home to more than 150 islands and widespread limestone formations. The coastline alternates between white sand beaches, steep cliffs, and dense mangrove forests, while the interior is marked by plantations.
The area became independent in 1872 when the king granted it town status and placed it under direct control from the capital. Before that it had been part of a larger southern administrative territory for centuries.
The name derives from the word for sword, referring to two curved blades found here centuries ago. Today the coastline shows fishing boats alongside modern longtails used by both religious communities for their livelihood.
An international airport and a main highway connect the area to other regions and make arrival easier for visitors. Most guests come between November and April when the weather is calm and dry.
A cave here holds tools and pottery fragments showing that people lived in this area around 40,000 years ago. The finds are among the oldest traces of human settlement in all of Southeast Asia.
