Lamphun, Administrative province in northern Thailand.
Lamphun is an administrative province in northern Thailand that stretches along the Ping River valley between forested mountain ranges. The area covers eight districts with rice fields, smaller towns, and village communities that sit in the gently rolling landscape between the hills.
The area was home to the northernmost Mon kingdom until 1281, when King Mengrai of Lan Na took control. This conquest marked the end of Mon rule and the beginning of integration into the expanding Lan Na realm.
The name comes from the old Mon language and refers to the historic kingdom of Haripunchai that stood here for centuries. Visitors still see influences of this past in the architecture of temples and in local craft traditions that have been preserved across generations.
Most visitors use the town of Lamphun as a base to explore the surrounding villages, temples, and natural areas from there. Those interested in rural landscapes and smaller settlements should plan enough time for travel between districts.
Three national parks lie within the provincial boundaries and preserve extensive forest areas with native flora and fauna. Hikers and nature lovers find trails through mountain forests here that differ clearly from the cultivated valley floors.
