Forum of Constantine, Ancient Roman forum in Istanbul, Turkey
The Forum of Constantine is a circular plaza centered on the Column of Constantine, which forms the heart of this ancient site. The column itself is made of large porphyry blocks held together by iron hoops and sits in a historic neighborhood near the Çemberlitaş tram station.
Emperor Constantine I established this site in 330 CE as a central point in his newly founded city, connecting it to the Mese, the main ceremonial road. The column itself marks his reign and was originally part of the religious and political framework of the ancient city.
The site was named Çemberlitaş by locals, referring to the iron hoops that hold the column together and meaning Hooped Stone in Turkish. This everyday name shows how residents identify with the monument and its most distinctive feature.
The site sits in a lively neighborhood and is easily reached by tram. Visitors can walk through the area and discover other historical places nearby.
The iron hoops holding the column together were added later as reinforcements, not part of the original construction. These repairs show how the structure was maintained over centuries to keep standing.
