Selim Konya Mosque

Selim Konya Mosque is an Ottoman mosque in Karatay featuring a central dome 31 meters (102 feet) across, four minarets, and seven smaller domes positioned above the portico. The prayer hall is spacious and decorated with detailed tilework throughout.

The mosque was built in 1558 under the direction of Prince Selim II, who would later become sultan while serving as regional governor of the province. It emerged during a period when major religious structures were being established across the region.

The interior walls display traditional Iznik tiles with geometric patterns and Quranic verses, reflecting the ceramic craftsmanship that Ottoman patrons valued highly during the 16th century. This decoration shows the artistic standards of religious spaces at that time.

The mosque is located near the Mevlana Museum in Konya's business district and is easy to access. Visitors should be aware that prayer times may affect access to certain areas of the building.

The building incorporates an astronomical clock and advanced acoustic engineering that allows sound to travel evenly across the entire prayer hall. This technical sophistication was remarkable for its time and demonstrates Ottoman craftsmanship.
