Termessos, Archaeological site in Taurus Mountains, Turkey
The ancient city of Termessos stands at 1,000 meters altitude, surrounded by steep cliffs and mountain peaks of the Taurus range.
Alexander the Great failed to conquer Termessos in 333 BCE due to its mountain location and strong defensive position of the Pisidian people.
The theater, built into the mountainside, accommodated 5,000 spectators and contained ornate stone carvings depicting local mythological stories.
The site requires a 20-minute uphill walk from the parking area through rocky terrain to reach the main archaeological structures.
The necropolis contains more than 1,200 rock-cut tombs spread across the mountainside, with inscriptions in ancient Greek and Latin languages.
