Dongji, Remote island in Penghu County, Taiwan
Dongji is a small island in Penghu County featuring granite formations and basalt cliffs along its coastline. The land rises to about 47 meters above sea level and displays purple coral reefs in shallow waters.
A lighthouse was built here in 1911 during Japanese administration and continues to guide ships through the Taiwan Strait. The structure marks over a century of continuous use for maritime safety.
A temple dedicated to Wang Ye worship stands on the island, with roots tracing back to the early 1800s. Local residents continue to maintain this religious tradition through regular ceremonies and gatherings.
The island is only reached by ferry from Magong, and crossings are best made during calm sea conditions. Basic accommodation is available in local homes, and services are limited, so advance planning is recommended.
In 2012, a fisherman discovered a fossilized ivory tusk 200 meters below sea level near these waters. The finding suggests the presence of prehistoric marine creatures in the region during ancient times.
