Treasure Hill Temple, Buddhist temple in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan.
Treasure Hill Temple is a place of worship on a hillside in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan, featuring several prayer halls and stone work. The site spreads across terraced levels and combines altars with garden areas laid out between the religious structures.
Soldiers who came to Taiwan in the late 1940s founded the place of worship on undeveloped land. Over the following decades, residents expanded the site with additional halls and dwellings that were later designated protected heritage.
The name refers to the hill where veterans built their first makeshift shelters after arriving in Taiwan. The prayer halls display wall paintings and carvings created by residents themselves, reflecting their origins from different provinces of mainland China.
You can reach the site on foot from Gongguan Metro Station along a steep path with stairs. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring water in warm weather, as the climb can be demanding.
Between the temple halls, vegetable plots grow that are tended by local residents, with produce sometimes sold in nearby streets. This tradition dates back to when the first settlers tried to sustain themselves on the hillside.
