National Dong Hwa University, Research university in Hualien, Taiwan.
National Dong Hwa University is a public research institution in Hualien on Taiwan's east coast, with eight colleges and several dozen degree and research programs. The sprawling campus sits on flat ground and covers more than 250 hectares, with lecture halls, research centers and dormitories spread out for around 10,000 students.
The university opened in 1994 as a new public institution for eastern Taiwan and started with a few colleges. In 2008 it merged with the National Hualien University of Education, expanding its teacher training and other academic offerings.
The College of Indigenous Studies at the university offers full-time programs for students who want to engage with indigenous cultures and languages. The research center works closely with local indigenous communities and organizes events where traditions and knowledge are shared.
The library offers work areas and access to over two million volumes plus electronic databases for students and researchers. The sprawling campus sometimes means longer walks between buildings, so allow extra time when moving around.
Nearly a thousand students from more than 50 countries attend programs at the university and contribute to the international atmosphere on campus. Some research centers work with indigenous communities in the region and develop projects on language and traditional knowledge.
