Hualien Martyrs' Shrine, Memorial shrine in Hualien City, Taiwan
Hualien Martyrs' Shrine is a memorial sanctuary in Hualien City featuring classical Chinese architecture with a red and white multi-tiered gate at its entrance. The complex consists of several buildings, including a main hall and two flanking structures that each serve specific commemorative purposes.
The site was founded in 1915 during Japanese rule as Karenko Shrine. It was reconstructed in 1981 following architectural styles inspired by northern Chinese palaces and has maintained this form ever since.
The shrine honors various historical figures and military personnel through memorial tablets that preserve their memory. Visitors can discover these tributes displayed throughout the different halls of the complex.
The shrine is located roughly 2 kilometers south of Hualien Station and is reached by climbing cement stairs. The walk is straightforward with paved pathways connecting the main structures once you arrive.
A suspension bridge originally connected visitors to the shrine before being replaced by the current staircase. This architectural change transformed how people experience their approach to the site.
