Hualien City, County seat in eastern Taiwan.

Hualien City is situated along Taiwan's eastern Pacific coastline, with mountains rising steeply to the west and creating a dramatic landscape. The tropical monsoon climate brings year-round rainfall, which supports the lush vegetation and defines the character of this coastal urban area.

The area originated as an indigenous settlement called Kilai and transformed into a structured city under Japanese administration beginning in 1912. During this period, surrounding villages were incorporated and urban infrastructure was fundamentally reorganized.

The city is home to several indigenous ethnic groups including the Amis, Atayal, Truku, and Bunun peoples, whose languages and customs remain visible in everyday life. You can experience this cultural mix through local markets, craft workshops, and restaurants where traditional indigenous recipes and cooking methods are still practiced today.

The city is served by Hualien Airport and has railway connections via the North-Link Line and an international port serving Japan and Southeast Asia. Visitors can use multiple transportation options to explore the area and make day trips to the natural attractions in the surrounding region.

The Dongdamen Night Market is the largest in eastern Taiwan and features a mix of local specialties and indigenous dishes served in an open-air setting. Visitors can experience both traditional and modern street food while soaking in the energy of a typical Taiwan night market experience.
