Shenji New Village, Creative community building in West District, Taiwan
Shenji New Village is a compound of light-yellow concrete buildings housing artist studios, galleries, and shops selling handcrafted goods from local makers. The layout connects multiple areas with dining spaces and cafés tucked throughout, creating natural gathering spots within the grounds.
This was built in the late 1960s by the Taiwan Provincial Government as housing for employees of the auditing office. Its transformation from residential dormitories to a creative community came decades later when the original function ended and the site was reimagined.
Local artists and makers use the studios and galleries to display their work and sell handcrafted items directly to visitors. The workshops held here bring together creators and interested people, making it a gathering place for the creative community.
The site is accessible by public bus from the city center and walkable once you arrive, with shops and restaurants spread throughout. Visit during the day when the studios are active and cafés are full, rather than in the evening when many spaces close.
The grounds feature playful art installations like oversized cream-puff helmets and a decorative merry-go-round that draw photographers from around the area. These whimsical objects show how the community adds humor and surprise to everyday spaces.
