Vedmezhe, Mining settlement in Dovzhansk Hromada, Ukraine
Vedmezhe is an urban-type settlement in the Dovzhansk Hromada, in the Luhansk region of southeastern Ukraine. The place sits on elevated ground and is surrounded by the kind of industrial landscape that comes from decades of coal mining activity.
The settlement was founded in 1905 around a coal mine that carried the name of the Bolshevik figure W. Volodarsky. It officially became an urban-type settlement in 1938, a status that reflected its growth around that industrial core.
The settlement sits in a region where Russian has long been the dominant everyday language, while Ukrainian is the official one. Walking through the streets, you can notice this mix in conversations and on signs around the area.
Vedmezhe is located in the Luhansk region, an area affected by conflict in recent years, so checking current travel conditions before any visit is strongly advised. Local services exist, but the infrastructure of a small industrial settlement should be expected.
The name Vedmezhe simply means "bear" in Ukrainian, and it replaced the Soviet-era name Volodarsk in 2016 as part of a national decommunization law. That law required hundreds of settlements across Ukraine to drop names tied to Soviet figures or ideology.
