Kermenchik

Kermenchik is an ancient fortress on the Kerch Peninsula built with substantial stone walls and multiple defensive structures positioned on elevated ground. The ruins display traces of different building periods that evolved across several centuries.

The fortress was established around 600 BC by Greek settlers who arrived in the region and was later occupied by successive civilizations. Its position reflects the strategic importance of the location to different powers controlling the Black Sea.

Archaeological excavations at Kermenchik have revealed numerous artifacts from different civilizations, including Byzantine, Ottoman, and ancient Greek periods.

The site is reached by a marked path from the main road and requires sturdy footwear and water, especially during warmer months. Guided tours are offered in spring and summer to learn more about the different construction phases.

The remains display visible layers of Greek, Byzantine, and Ottoman building techniques stacked upon each other, allowing archaeologists to track how fortification methods changed over centuries. These layered structures offer a window into the shifting military strategies of different periods.
