Wayne County spans 1,383 square miles along Lake Ontario, combining 604 square miles of land with 779 square miles of water territory.
The county formed in 1823 from parts of Seneca and Ontario counties, naming it after General Anthony Wayne of the American Revolution.
The Fox Sisters from Hydesville initiated the Spiritualist movement, making Wayne County a center for religious developments in the 19th century.
The county contains fifteen towns and seven villages, with Lyons serving as the administrative center for 91,283 residents recorded in 2020.
Wayne County leads New York State in apple production with over 150 manufacturing firms supporting the agricultural economic base.
