South Jamaica, Residential neighborhood in Queens, New York.

South Jamaica is a residential area in the southern part of Queens borough in New York City, stretching between Jamaica Avenue to the north and Rockaway Boulevard to the south. Dense housing blocks with multi-story buildings alternate with commercial strips, and public facilities such as schools and community centers are spread across the area.

The area shifted from farmland to built-up residential zones starting in the early 20th century, with first settlements forming along rail lines. The largest growth surge came after World War II, when new housing projects brought many families to the region.

The name comes from its position south of Jamaica's historic center, and the district shows rows of brick and wooden apartment buildings that line wide streets. Thousands of commuters pass through daily between their homes and shops along the main roads, while small businesses and food stands at the corners mark everyday life.

Several Metropolitan Transportation Authority subway lines stop at stations within the district and connect it to Manhattan and other parts of the city. Buses run along the main streets and make getting around Queens easier, with most routes operating in the early morning and late evening as well.

John F. Kennedy airport lies just a few kilometers to the east, and aviation administration offices have been set up here because of that. Planes on approach often pass low over the rooftops and shape the soundscape of the district.
