Mount Edgecumbe

Mount Edgecumbe is a stratovolcano on Kruzof Island in Alaska that rises to 3,201 feet (976 meters) and is built from andesite rock and volcanic deposits. The cone-shaped form shows clearly the layers of lava and ash that have built up over thousands of years.

Captain James Cook named the mountain in 1778 during his third voyage after a similar hill near Plymouth in England. The name became official and replaced the older designations used by the people of the region.

The Tlingit call this peak L'úx, a word that means flash or blink and refers to the clouds that often wrap around the summit. This name connects the mountain to the landscape and the observations the people have made across generations.

A trail system from the 1930s leads to the summit and offers views of the Alexander Archipelago along the way. The path was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and requires several hours of climbing through forest and open terrain.

The volcano sits 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of the Queen Charlotte Fault, where the North American and Pacific plates meet. This proximity to the fault zone explains the tectonic activity that shaped the mountain.
