Pikesville, Census-designated place in Baltimore County, Maryland
Pikesville is a residential area northwest of Baltimore city limits that spans about 12 square miles (31 square kilometers) with neighborhoods and commercial districts at 155 meters elevation. The area combines suburban character with established business centers and local services.
The area was named in 1818 to honor American soldier Zebulon Pike and became a significant suburban community in Baltimore County. Its growth as a residential area followed the expansion of nearby Baltimore throughout the 20th century.
Pikesville became a center of Jewish life after World War II as families relocated from East Baltimore and established synagogues and kosher businesses. This heritage continues to define the community and its local institutions today.
The Pikesville branch of Baltimore County Public Library on Reisterstown Road provides computer access, printing services, and resources focused on Russian culture and literature. The area is best accessed by car, and parking is generally available throughout the community.
The community is home to one of the largest concentrations of Russian-speaking immigrants in the region, evident in local shops, restaurants, and cultural events. This population has shaped local life in ways that extend beyond the area's Jewish heritage.
