Bare Hills Historic District
Bare Hills Historic District, Historic district in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States.
Bare Hills Historic District is a residential area covering about 275 acres that stretches along Jones Falls near Lake Roland Park. The homes display two distinct architectural styles: Gothic Revival buildings from the 1890s to 1920s and Mid-Century Modern houses built later.
The area emerged from mining and milling operations in the early 1800s before transforming into a residential neighborhood. Railroad development in the 19th century accelerated this shift toward suburban living.
Aquila Scott, a blacksmith and Methodist preacher, founded one of Baltimore County's first free African-American communities here around 1830. This heritage shapes how the neighborhood feels today, with residents and buildings reflecting a long tradition of independence and self-determination.
The district sits along Falls Road, which provides direct access to downtown Baltimore and makes the area easy to explore. The streets are walkable, and proximity to Lake Roland Park offers additional outdoor recreation options nearby.
The area sits atop serpentine rock formations that fueled Maryland's chromium mining industry in the 1800s. This rare mineral beneath visitors' feet once drove the region's economy before the place transformed into a residential community.
