Bare Hills Historic District
Bare Hills Historic District, Historic district in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States.
The Bare Hills Historic District spans 275 acres of residential area with Gothic Revival and Mid-Century Modern architecture along Jones Falls near Lake Roland Park.
The district emerged from industrial origins in mining and milling during the early 1800s before transforming into a suburban residential area influenced by railroad development.
Aquila Scott, a blacksmith and Methodist preacher, established one of Baltimore County's earliest free African-American communities in Bare Hills around 1830.
The district's location along Falls Road provides direct access to Baltimore city while maintaining the architectural features from the 1890-1920 construction period.
The area contains serpentine rock formations that supported Maryland's chromium mining industry, making it a leading producer until the mid-nineteenth century.
