Hooper House, Modernist residence in Baltimore County, United States
The Hooper House is a Bauhaus-style residence in Baltimore County that spreads across one level and is defined by extensive glass walls. The interior is organized around a central courtyard, from which most rooms open directly outside, while thick stone barriers define separate zones for daily living and entertaining.
Architects Marcel Breuer and Herbert Beckhard designed this house in 1959 for client Edith Hooper as a commission. The project brought European Bauhaus ideas into American suburbia and became recognized as a model for contemporary residential design.
The house demonstrates how mid-century design opened up domestic spaces to nature through extensive glazing and flexible room arrangements. The flowing interior layout reflects a shift in how Americans wanted to live, blending private family life with connection to the outdoors.
The building is single-level with some underground areas and features insulated glass panels that help regulate interior temperature. Visitors should know that the central courtyard offers changing experiences depending on weather, and the glass surfaces look different throughout the day.
The floor plan centers on a courtyard that frames views toward nearby Lake Roland, with bedrooms and living areas opening directly onto it. This arrangement lets you see the lake from nearly every main room, creating an unusual connection between the home and the surrounding landscape.
