Fort Garrison, Colonial stone fort in Stevenson, Maryland
The rectangular stone blockhouse measures 48 feet in length and 18 feet in width, with walls reaching two feet in thickness.
Constructed in 1695 under Governor Francis Nicholson's orders, the fort served as a headquarters for mounted rangers patrolling between the Patapsco and Susquehanna Rivers.
Seven rangers occupied the structure during winter months, maintaining surveillance of Native American paths and promoting religious principles among local settlers.
The Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks maintains the structure, which received National Register of Historic Places designation in 1971.
The building remains the sole original stone blockhouse from Maryland's colonial period, featuring a large stone fireplace and second-story loft addition.
