Fort Garrison, Colonial stone fort in Stevenson, Maryland

Fort Garrison is a rectangular stone blockhouse in Stevenson distinguished by its sturdy walls and thoughtful spatial layout. The structure contains a large stone fireplace in the lower area and a loft addition built later on the upper floor.

The blockhouse was built in 1695 under the governor's orders and was designed from the start as a base for patrols between two major river regions. It played an important role in the early defense of the colony against various frontier threats.

The structure carries the name of a colonial officer and shows traces of its past role as a frontier outpost. Visitors can still recognize the sturdy construction that was necessary for its defensive purpose at the time.

The site is maintained by local parks and recreation officials and is equipped with basic informational signage for visitors. The best access is on foot from the nearby street, and it is worth taking time to observe the details of the stonework.

The building is the only standing stone blockhouse from colonial times in Maryland and thereby retains rare architectural value. Its sturdiness and workmanship offer direct insight into the construction methods of the region's early settlers.
