Mountain Lakes, Administrative borough in Morris County, New Jersey, USA.

Mountain Lakes is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, organized around four lakes: Birchwood Lake, Crystal Lake, Mountain Lake, and Shadow Lake. Homes and parks fill the space between and around these water bodies, creating a settlement shaped by its natural features.

The settlement began in 1910 when developer Herbert Hapgood converted forested land into a planned suburban community. Official incorporation as a borough occurred in 1924.

The four lakes serve as the natural center of community life, with pathways and parks connecting the water's edge throughout the settlement. This focus on the lakes shapes how residents experience their surroundings and interact with neighbors.

Access to the area is available via the Montclair-Boonton train line, which connects directly to New York City. The pathways around the lakes are good for walking and exploring the settlement on foot.

During World War II, the area housed Navy laboratories dedicated to underwater sound research. This facility contributed to military technology development during the conflict.
