The land became a county park in 1958 when Morris County acquired it for public use. Its name comes from a Dutch word meaning lookout point, reflecting the site's role in the landscape.
The park welcomes visitors on a walk-in basis without advance registration. Groups of 25 or more should arrange permits, and picnic areas with tables and grills are available for reservations.
From the summit at 897 feet elevation, visitors can see the New York City skyline on clear days. The park also features a large balancing rock formation left by glaciers.
