St. Matthews stands as a residential community within Jefferson County, featuring neighborhoods of single-family homes alongside commercial areas and public parks.

The settlement began in 1779 when Colonel James John Floyd established Floyd's Station during the American Revolutionary War after purchasing local land.

The construction of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in 1850 and Holy Trinity Catholic Church in 1882 shaped the religious identity of this Kentucky community.

The city government manages essential services including police protection, waste collection, recycling programs, and an online system for property tax payments.

The area transformed from a major potato shipping center until 1946 into the fifth-largest shopping destination in Kentucky with Mall St. Matthews.
