Matawan, Borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, US

Matawan is a borough in Monmouth County situated near Raritan Bay, with residential neighborhoods, shopping areas, and parks spread throughout its municipal boundaries. The community sits along waterways that have shaped its layout and development over time.

The area was originally known as Mechananienk, a Lenape territory settled by the Dutch in the 1600s under various names including New Aberdeen before becoming Matawan. This name change reflected shifting populations and community identity over generations.

The borough's name comes from a Lenape word meaning "where two waters meet," reflecting its position between waterways that shape the community's character today.

A train station provides connections to key destinations across the region while bus routes serve local travel needs. Visitors will find highways nearby for broader access to surrounding areas.

Two shark attacks occurred in Matawan Creek in 1916, an event that drew attention to water safety concerns along the Jersey shore. The incident sparked broader awareness about marine dangers and influenced how communities approached swimming and beach safety.
