Kingston, Borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States
Kingston is a borough situated on the western bank of the Susquehanna River in northeastern Pennsylvania, directly adjacent to Wilkes-Barre. The municipality features a mixed residential landscape with older homes and small business areas along its main roads.
The location was officially incorporated as a borough in 1857 and named after Kingston, Rhode Island. Its growth became closely tied to the rise of the coal mining industry, which dominated the local economy in the following decades.
The town reflects its roots in coal mining and carries the legacy of the workers who shaped the region. The residential areas show typical architecture from the industrial era, telling the story of miners and their families.
The area is easily reached from the river, with several smaller roads leading inward from the main highways into the center. Visitors should expect older infrastructure and allow time to explore the neighborhoods on foot.
One of Pennsylvania's earliest recorded public school buildings was constructed here in the 1770s, marking a turning point in the state's education history. This early commitment to schooling reveals the values held by the founding community.
