Kingston Armory, arsenaal in Pennsylvania, Verenigde Staten van Amerika
The Kingston Armory is an arsenal in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, completed in 1923 and constructed from yellow brick with three stories arranged in a U-shape. Inside, the building contains a drill hall, classrooms, offices, and storage areas, featuring Classical Revival architecture with columns and symmetrical design.
The 109th Field Artillery Regiment, based here for nearly 250 years, traces back to 1775, before the United States was founded. The unit served in major conflicts from the Revolutionary War through modern deployments in Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan before being officially disbanded on August 31, 2025.
The Kingston Armory has served the community beyond military functions, hosting concerts, circuses, and festivals that drew people from across the region. Notable performances by bands like Simon & Garfunkel and Jefferson Airplane between 1967 and 1970 established it as a cultural gathering place.
The building is easy to locate on Market Street in Wilkes-Barre and sits on grounds covering about 12 acres (5 hectares). The drill hall is a large, spacious interior area with high ceilings that continues to host events today.
In 1950, a tragic train accident near Ohio killed 33 soldiers of the 109th Field Artillery Regiment. Their bodies were brought to the Kingston Armory, where stationed troops gave their fallen comrades back to their families in a moment of respect and community sorrow.
