St. Stanislaus Institute, Former Catholic orphanage complex in Newport Township, Pennsylvania
St. Stanislaus Institute is a building complex in Newport Township comprising three connected structures and three separate buildings spread across about 4 acres of land. The site includes a main orphanage building, a dormitory, laundry facilities, a boiler room, a rectory, and a garage.
The complex was built between 1918 and 1939 during a period of architectural transition. The boys dormitory shows Spanish Revival features while the chapel displays Modern Movement characteristics from that era.
The institute operated as an orphanage specifically for Polish children, reflecting the strength of Polish immigrant families who settled in this region. The buildings and grounds tell the story of a community dedicated to sheltering and educating its young.
The institute sits in Newport Township on Old Newport Street and is accessible by car, though some areas may be restricted or private. The expansive grounds mean you will want to allow time to see all the structures and understand the full layout.
The complex earned listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, officially protecting its architectural and social legacy. The facility closed in 1972 after serving children for nearly a century.
