Shenandoah, Mining town in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania
Shenandoah is a borough in Schuylkill County in northern Pennsylvania characterized by traditional row houses and remnants of coal mining infrastructure. The settlement shows the marks of industrial development from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Peter Kehley established the first settlement in 1830 with a log cabin and farm, before the Philadelphia Land Company purchased the land in 1850. The location subsequently became central to coal mining operations in the region.
The borough contains multiple historic religious buildings, including the first Greek Catholic church and the oldest Lithuanian Roman Catholic church in the United States. These structures reflect the religious diversity of immigrant communities who settled here during the mining era.
The location sits on gently rolling terrain and is walkable, with most points of interest relatively close together. Sturdy footwear is helpful as streets are uneven and some passages are steep.
Three major railroad lines served this mining center at the same time: the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, and Reading Railroad. These connections made the town a key hub for coal transport throughout the region.
