Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ukrainian Catholic church in Centralia, US
The white stone church with its blue dome stands on North Paxton Street, overlooking the empty streets of what remains of Centralia.
Built in 1911 during Centralia's coal mining peak, the church survived the 1962 underground mine fire that forced most residents to abandon the town.
The interior contains traditional Eastern European religious art, including an extensive collection of icons and religious paintings displayed on the altar wall.
Weekly services continue at the church, with a gathering space for refreshments where congregation members meet after Sunday celebrations.
The church stands on solid rock rather than coal deposits, which protected it from the underground fire that continues to burn beneath the town.
