Marine Corps Base Quantico, Military base in Triangle, Virginia.
Marine Corps Base Quantico is a military installation in Triangle, Virginia, spreading across three counties and covering more than 55,000 acres (about 223 square kilometers). The complex houses numerous facilities for training, logistics and administration, including firing ranges, barracks and military schools used daily by thousands of service members.
The site changed from a fishing village to a military installation in 1917, initially serving the Navy during World War I as a shipyard and training location. Over the following decades, the base expanded continuously and became one of the most important centers of the Marine Corps.
The base is often called the birthplace of Marine officers, as generations of future leaders have trained here for decades. The grounds remain restricted military territory, and visitors can only pass through the gates with prior authorization, reinforcing the sense of a closed and controlled community.
Access remains heavily restricted for the general public, and only individuals with military credentials or explicit invitation can enter the grounds. Those wishing to visit the base should secure official clearance in advance and present valid identification when passing through security checkpoints.
Besides the Marines, the grounds also house the FBI Academy and the headquarters of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, allowing different agencies to conduct their courses and investigations on the same site. This proximity has led to the base serving as a filming location for numerous crime series and movies, and it is frequently mentioned in popular culture.
