The district faced evacuation in 1777 during the Revolutionary War, leading to the construction of Fort Salem at the First Presbyterian Church location.
The buildings display architectural progression from Georgian to Federal styles, with the Judge Blanchard House from 1790 standing as the oldest structure.
The district extends from the former Delaware and Hudson Railroad tracks northward to Park Place, with boundaries along County Routes 30 and 153.
A major fire in 1840 destroyed numerous early buildings and records, prompting the establishment of the Proudfit Building as the municipal service center.
