South Bronx, Urban district in The Bronx, US
South Bronx is an urban area south of Fordham Road in The Bronx that includes residential blocks, commercial streets, and public facilities along Grand Concourse Boulevard. The area stretches from the Harlem River to Bruckner Boulevard and combines densely built neighborhoods with parks and wide avenues.
During the 1970s the area experienced severe decline with many abandoned buildings and fires that led to extensive rebuilding programs. From the 1980s onward gradual reconstruction and investment began to transform the neighborhood.
This neighborhood was the birthplace of hip-hop when DJ Kool Herc hosted block parties on Sedgwick Avenue in the early 1970s. Today murals and street art throughout the area recall that cultural origin and the music that emerged here.
Subway lines 2, 4, 5, and 6 connect the area with Manhattan while local buses run within the neighborhood. Most streets follow a grid pattern which makes orientation easier, especially along the main north-south corridors.
The Bronx Terminal Market near Yankee Stadium houses more than one hundred shops in a building that combines modern design with elements from the original 1935 structure. Solar panels on the roof provide part of the energy needs for the complex.
