Austin, Administrative division in Chicago, United States.
Austin is a neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago, stretching between North Avenue, West North Avenue, Central Avenue and the Chicago River. The residential streets follow a regular grid with older brick and wood buildings, along with a mix of single-family homes and smaller apartment buildings.
The first settlers arrived in the mid-1800s and built homes along what is now Chicago Avenue, long before the area was annexed by the city of Chicago in 1899. The population grew during the early 1900s with the construction of streetcar lines and new housing for workers from nearby industrial areas.
The division maintains dedicated offices that address civil rights and equity matters, reflecting the community's commitment to inclusive governance.
Most shops and restaurants line Chicago Avenue, and Columbus Park borders the western edge of the neighborhood. The interior streets are quieter with little through traffic, and sidewalks are generally suitable for walking.
The eastern boundary follows the historic Austin Avenue, named after Henry Austin, one of the landowners who sold parcels in the 1860s. The name remained even after the city consolidated smaller settlements into a larger administrative unit.
