Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Private liberal arts colleges in Geneva, United States.
Hobart and William Smith Colleges sit on a 170-acre campus along the eastern shore of Seneca Lake in Geneva, with more than 50 academic buildings spread across the grounds. The layout combines older structures from the 1800s with more recent facilities for classes, research, and student life near the waterfront.
The school began in 1822 as Geneva College and became Hobart College three decades later in honor of its early supporter, Bishop John Henry Hobart. The companion college for women opened in 1908 after a donation from the sisters of philanthropist William Smith, eventually creating a shared campus with separate traditions.
Students participate in 30 varsity athletic programs while maintaining strong connections to both Episcopal Church traditions and contemporary educational values.
The campus is open to visitors year-round, with tours available by advance arrangement to access interior spaces in academic buildings. Walks along the lakefront remain accessible without appointment and offer a good overview of the layout and surrounding Finger Lakes landscape.
Students of any gender can enroll in either college yet participate in events and traditions of both, creating an unusual level of flexibility within American higher education. The library holds a collection of manuscripts and rare books focused on Finger Lakes region history and early American education.
