Belhurst Castle, Historic residence on Seneca Lake in Geneva, US.
Belhurst Castle is a historic residence on Seneca Lake in Geneva, New York. The three-story mansion features Medina sandstone walls, nine bays, a slate gable roof, and several towers topped with conical and pyramidal caps.
Construction took place between 1885 and 1889 on land that once held a Seneca Indian village and the Ontario Glass Manufacturing Company. Cornelius J. Dwyer ran a speakeasy and gambling house here during Prohibition until authorities shut it down in 1952.
The Romanesque design includes Syrian arches and eyebrow windows that were popular in the late 19th century. Today visitors find a working winery inside and can attend weddings along the lakefront grounds.
The estate now includes three hotels, two restaurants, a winery, and event spaces. The lakefront location suits visitors who want to combine historic architecture with exploring the Finger Lakes region.
Albert W. Fuller designed the building with decorative stone chimneys and distinctive windows that remain in place today. The original sandstone walls showcase craftsmanship from the 1880s and came from local quarries near Rochester.
