The land served as a Naval Training Center from 1942 to 1946, preparing over 411,000 recruits during World War II before becoming a state park.
The park contains evidence of the Revolutionary War period, including remnants of the former Indian village of Kendaia and a pioneer cemetery.
The park maintains 243 electric campsites, a marina with 96 boat slips, multiple launch sites, and gas pumps for water activities.
The grounds feature extensive sport facilities, including baseball fields, basketball courts, and a sandy beach with designated swimming areas.
