Robert Ingersoll Birthplace
Robert Ingersoll Birthplace, Federal style historic house in Dresden, New York.
The Robert Ingersoll Birthplace is a Federal-style house in Dresden, New York, with a two-story central section featuring three front bays and a gable roof. A saltbox-shaped extension on the west side adds to the original structure dating from around 1800.
The building was originally constructed around 1800 as a church parsonage and later became the birthplace of Robert Green Ingersoll in 1833. Its transformation into a museum preserved it as a place of historical significance in American intellectual life.
The house reflects the life of a family shaped by religious traditions in early 19th-century America. Visitors experience how this dwelling connects to a pivotal thinker who would later challenge conventional beliefs.
The site is open to visitors and features exhibits about the life and work of its most famous resident. Visitors can explore the period rooms and take time to examine the displayed artifacts at their own pace.
The museum preserves a rediscovered musical composition from the Gilded Age dedicated to the resident. This rare piece serves as a fascinating record of the artistic admiration that Ingersoll enjoyed during his lifetime.
