11th Mississippi Infantry Monument, Civil War memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park, United States
The monument displays a bronze statue of a soldier holding the Mississippi flag and stands on a stone base. Bronze plaques on all four sides of the monument provide information about the regiment and the soldiers who died there.
The regiment was involved in a deadly charge during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The soldiers suffered heavy losses as they fought against entrenched positions.
The monument honors soldiers from different Mississippi counties and shows their regional ties to the state. Visitors can read the names and origins of the individual companies on the bronze plaques surrounding the monument.
The monument is located southwest of Gettysburg on West Confederate Avenue and is easy to reach on foot. The site has open views and is surrounded by other war memorials throughout the park.
During the regiment's charge, several color bearers fell quickly one after another in the fighting. This shows how dangerous the position was and how determined the soldiers were to hold their flag.
