125 Years, public artwork by Jenny Holzer
125 Years is an installation by Jenny Holzer on the University of Pennsylvania's Hill Square featuring a granite pathway with benches and curbs. Quotations from women who attended the university over 125 years are engraved into the stone, while wooden planks cross over a wetland area in the center.
The installation was completed and officially dedicated in November 2003 to mark 125 years since women first enrolled at the university in the late 1800s.
The installation honors the history and achievements of women at the university. Visitors walking through can read the engraved words and reflect on women's contributions to the school and beyond.
The artwork is located on the University of Pennsylvania's Hill Square and is open to the public for visitors and students to enjoy. The best way to experience it is to take a calm walk along the pathway and read the engraved quotations at your own pace.
The work was developed by Jenny Holzer in collaboration with landscape architecture firm OLIN and lighting designer L'Observatoire. This collaboration of multiple artists and designers created a space where text, nature, and light come together in a single experience.
