Allen House

Allen House is a colonial residence in Shrewsbury built in the early 1700s that later operated as a tavern. The rooms are furnished with period pieces and arranged to show how daily life and business operations functioned during that era.

The property was built around 1710 as a secondary residence for the Stillwell family and was later transformed into the Blue Ball Tavern under new ownership. This conversion into a public inn marked a significant shift in the property's use.

The building served as a gathering place for community groups including a church vestry and local organizations. Visitors can see today how such spaces brought together people from different parts of society.

The house is located at the corner of Broad Street and Sycamore Avenue and operates today as a museum. Visitors should allow time to walk through the different rooms to get a complete sense of life from that period.

In 1779 the house was the scene of a Loyalist raid during the Revolutionary War, with Continental troops killed and captured in the attack. This dramatic episode shows how directly this location was caught up in the conflicts of that era.
