Poricy Park, Nature museum in Middletown Township, United States.
Poricy Park is a nature preserve in Monmouth County covering 250 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and meadows that support diverse animals and plants. The site includes a stream where fossils from an ancient sea remain embedded in the ground.
The park was created in 1969 when local residents opposed a sewer project that threatened Poricy Brook. The nature reserve was formally established between 1970 and 1973 to protect the land.
The Murray Farmhouse and Barn display exhibits about how farming families lived and worked in this region long ago. Walking through these buildings, you can see the tools, spaces, and daily practices that shaped local life.
The Nature Center offers tools for fossil searching in the streambed, with guidance provided to help visitors search responsibly and avoid damaging the habitat. Multiple trails wind through the grounds, making it easy to explore different parts of the property at your own pace.
The streambed holds fossils from 72 million years ago, when marine creatures lived in a shallow sea that once covered this region. You can actually unearth and touch these remnants from an ancient world that disappeared long before humans arrived.
