Babcock Nature Preserve, Nature preserve and educational site in Eden, Vermont, US
Babcock Nature Preserve is a nature preserve in Eden, Vermont, encompassing around 1,000 acres of boreal forest with three ponds and an extensive bog. The landscape features varied woodland terrain where different plant and animal communities thrive in distinct ecological zones.
The land was donated by Robert Babcock, who previously served as Lieutenant Governor of Vermont and first provost of Vermont State Colleges, along with his wife Anne Hanchett. This gift created the preserve as a place for long-term conservation and research.
Northern Vermont University maintains the preserve as an outdoor laboratory for students studying field biology, ornithology, and environmental science courses.
Access to the preserve is through a gated gravel road that requires some effort to navigate. Basic rustic cabins near Rittenbush Pond offer visitors simple shelter and a base for exploring the area.
Researchers have documented and observed Common Loons at several ponds throughout the preserve, particularly at Rittenbush Pond. The presence of these specialized waterfowl makes the area notable for bird watchers and ornithologists.
