Broadway Avenue Bridge, Road bridge in Minneapolis, United States.
Broadway Avenue Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, connecting both sides of the city. The steel structure has four traffic lanes and provides enough clearance for river vessels to pass underneath.
An earlier bridge at this location was built in 1887 to serve the northern industrial district. The current structure was built in 1987 after the original bridge could no longer meet modern traffic demands.
The bridge design incorporates flat columns that taper together at the piers, reflecting the engineering preferences of architects Norman C. Davis and Shawn Pierson Bruns.
The bridge is open to vehicle traffic during normal hours and provides a steady route across the river. Pedestrians and cyclists should check conditions before crossing, as traffic is usually heavy here.
One arch from the original 1887 bridge was saved and now serves as a separate pedestrian walkway. This historical piece connects Nicollet Island to the St. Anthony neighborhood and shows how the old structure adapted to new purposes.
