Camp O'Ryan, Military training ground in North Java, United States.
Camp O'Ryan is a former military training facility covering 375 acres in Wyoming County, New York, with multiple rifle ranges and training structures scattered across rolling terrain. The property was equipped for live-fire training and various military exercises.
Operations began in 1949 as the Wethersfield training area before being renamed in 1952 to honor Major General John F. O'Ryan. The site remained active for about 25 years until operations ceased in 1974.
The camp served as a key training hub where members of the New York National Guard, Naval Militia, Army Reserves, Air Force, and State Police prepared for their duties. It brought together personnel from multiple military and law enforcement branches in a single location.
The site is no longer operational and sits on private property, making visits not generally possible. Those interested in the location's military past may explore the surrounding area and learn about its history from external sources.
Edward N. George Jr. purchased the land from Charles R. Greenan in 1949 and immediately leased it to the Federal Government for military training purposes. This rapid conversion of private land for military use reflects the post-war expansion of training facilities in the region.
