Camp Ripley, military training facility in Minnesota, United States
Camp Ripley is a large training facility in Morrison County, Minnesota, covering approximately 53,000 acres of land. It includes shooting ranges, simulation centers, a paved runway for large aircraft, drop zones, and various maneuver areas designed for field exercises and specialized training operations.
The site was acquired in 1929 and officially named in 1930 after the historic Fort Ripley from the 1800s, which was built to maintain peace between settlers and local Native American groups. The paved runway dates to the 1930s and was extended in the 1980s to accommodate larger aircraft.
Camp Ripley is a place where different groups come together to train: soldiers, police officers, firefighters, and rescue teams work side by side. The cooperation between local and international forces shapes the character of the place, especially through the long-standing partnership with Norwegian troops who visit regularly.
The grounds are very large, so comfortable shoes are important for exploring. Public access is limited, but special open days and demonstrations sometimes happen where visitors can learn more about training activities.
The grounds include the Minnesota Military & Veterans Museum and Green Prairie Cemetery, a historic burial ground with graves dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. These sites tell the stories of local civilians and soldiers connected to Minnesota's military history.
