Chadwick Lake

Chadwick Lake, lake in New York, USA

Chadwick Lake is a manmade reservoir in Newburgh, New York, located northwest of the intersection of State Routes 32 and 300. The water has a brownish tint due to manganese, and it is ringed by a trail spanning about 4 miles that allows for walking, biking, and boating around its perimeter.

The lake was established in 1926 when the Chadwick family built a dam on Quassaick Creek and operated it as private property for fishing and recreation. The town of Newburgh purchased the property in 1962, integrating it into the municipal water system as a backup source, though today it primarily serves recreational purposes.

The lake bears the name of the Chadwick family, who originally created it for private use. Today it serves as a gathering place where the community walks the trails, fishes along the shore, and enjoys picnics and outdoor games together.

Visitors must check in at the guard house before entering to ensure safety and maintenance of the area. The trails around the lake are easy to navigate and suitable for families, cyclists, and hikers of all abilities, with rest areas provided for sitting and viewing.

The lake water displays a distinctive brownish tint caused by naturally occurring manganese, giving it an unusual appearance that sets it apart from other lakes in the region. This feature is immediately noticeable to visitors and makes it visually distinctive.
