Dierssen Wildlife Management Area

The Dierssen Wildlife Management Area encompasses 40 acres of marshy woodland with two ponds situated between the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and Potomac River.

The land was donated as a waterfowl sanctuary and received its name from Marshall Bidwell Dierssen, contributing to local conservation efforts in Maryland.

The management area functions as an educational resource where schools and organizations conduct environmental studies to promote wildlife conservation awareness.

Visitors can access the area through the Pennyfield Lock parking lot at milepost 19.7, with opportunities for hiking and photography throughout the year.

The area maintains wood duck nesting boxes and serves as a protected sanctuary for waterfowl, wading birds, and songbirds along the Potomac migration route.
