Seneca Aqueduct, Naviduct at Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, Maryland, US.

The Seneca Aqueduct features three red sandstone arches spanning Seneca Creek, enabling canal boats to cross the waterway while maintaining water level.

Built between 1829 and 1832, this structure served as the first of eleven aqueducts constructed along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal's 184.5-mile length.

The aqueduct represents early American engineering excellence, incorporating materials from the local Seneca Quarry for both the structure and lock keeper's house.

The structure includes Lock 24, also known as Riley's Lock, which adjusts water levels for boats traveling in both upstream and downstream directions.

A flood in 1971 destroyed one of the three arches, leading to the installation of steel beams and a modern pedestrian bridge for continued visitor access.
