Elk Mountain Ski Area, Ski resort in Herrick Township, United States
Elk Mountain Ski Area is a ski resort in northeastern Pennsylvania offering 27 trails that range from beginner green runs to demanding black diamond slopes. The area relies on an extensive snowmaking system to keep conditions consistent through the winter season.
The resort opened in 1959 with a basic lodge and a single T-bar lift serving early skiers. Over the following decades, it grew steadily to meet the demand of an increasing number of winter visitors.
The dining area at the base lodge serves regional dishes and homemade soups in a recently renovated space. Visitors often pause there between runs to warm up and try local flavors.
Arriving early in the morning helps avoid lines at the lifts, especially on weekends and holidays. Beginners can start on the lower green trails, while more experienced skiers can head directly to the upper slopes.
Elk Mountain sits at around 2,667 feet (about 810 meters) of elevation, making it the highest lift-served ski area in eastern Pennsylvania. That altitude naturally brings heavier snowfall and a longer season compared to most other ski areas in the state.
