Lamprechtsofen, Show cave in Sankt Martin bei Lofer, Austria.
Lamprechtsofen is a show cave system running through limestone rock formations with approximately 600 meters of passages accessible to visitors through illuminated tunnels. The underground sections reveal carved stone walls and flowing water channels.
Systematic exploration of the cave system began in 1822, leading to public opening in 1905. This development included the installation of an innovative electric lighting system with colored lamps.
The name comes from a legendary outlaw named Lamprecht whose story is still told in the region today. Visitors experience guided tours that explain the underground water systems flowing through the carved limestone passages.
Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the walking paths are uneven and can be slippery in places. The underground temperature stays cool year-round, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea.
This cave system holds the record as the world's longest through-cave with two separate entrances. Polish researchers discovered the second entrance high in the mountains in 1993.
